Flu season is upon us full blast, so I ran down to the store and stocked up on a few essentials.  You never know when the sick bug is going to get you and frankly, the last thing you will want to do when that happens is shuffle through the store in your slippers and lopsided buttoned shirt with your red nose leading the way, looking for things to make you feel better.  So it is good to stock up now on essentials such as cough syrup, a thermometer, Kleenex and most importantly, sick toast.

Yep, I said Sick Toast.  What the heck is that?  Whenever I was sick as a child, my mother would make a treat that was sure to make even the nastiest flu a little better. It was called sick toast! This simple remedy was handed down by my grandmother, and involved a simple piece of buttered toast, cut in three pieces. This magical piece of toast was only served if you were sick.

Having the flu involved staying home from school and watching an old black and white television in my bedroom. Game show after game show and half hour sitcoms were my company. The Price is Right, Magic Squares, I Love Lucy, My Favorite Martian, Gilligan’s Island. I would watch show after show, bored to death and coughing. And then my mother would appear with the magic sick toast and suddenly I would feel so much better!

Why cutting a piece of toast into three pieces made so much difference, I will never know. I guess because it was a little special thing my mother would do for us when we were sick. But the magical qualities of sick toast would brighten up my dark little bedroom, would put a smile on my face, and totally make the sun come out. Sick toast could move mountains!

I carried on the tradition with my own children and they quickly learned to love sick toast as much as I did. If they were home sick from school, they knew that at some point of the day, sick toast would make it’s entrance and cheer everyone up.

Butter the toast. (Real butter is a plus).

Cut the toast into three pieces. (The middle piece is the magic slice!)

dog on heat vent

Faith dog caught her toenail on the berber carpet a few weeks ago and I had to take her to the vet. She was pretty down in the dumps when I returned with her and it occurred to me that a doggy version sick toast might help. So I broke a dog biscuit into three pieces.

She is still smiling!
