I have to say that working with colored pencils is kind of a new thing for me.  I tend to work mainly in acrylics where color is concerned.  But lately, I’ve noticed a whole trend toward adult coloring books.  Filled with amazingly detailed drawings, these fun coloring books are very captivating.

Queen of Hearts pattern - decorative painting

I decided to create my own design based on a pattern that I did about a year ago, The Queen of Hearts.  The Queen of Hearts was done in acrylic paint on a table top.  She is one of my more popular premium patterns.

But the poor queen has had nobody to talk to in over a year, so with an upcoming colored pencil review, I decided to create her sister, the Queen of Spades.   After all, I needed something very detailed to bring out the vibrant colors in the art pencils.

And you can download the Queen of Spades pattern FREE here!

So let’s talk about those Ohuhu 48-color Art Colored Pencils.  They are high quality drawing pencils for writing, drawing and sketching.  Beautifully crafted with recycled wood, which is environmentally friendly and non- toxic.

And just look at the selection of colors!

Begin by printing out the pattern.  Flip it over and color with back side with charcoal.  Turn it right side up and place it in the center of the wooden tray.  Use a pencil to trace over the lines (transferring it onto the wood).  If you do not want to do the charcoal method, you can always use tracing paper.

Use the black Art Pencil to fill in all the minute details.

Once the drawing has been fully transferred, it is time to add some color!

With this particular pattern, I chose a pallet of blues, greens, browns, golds and reds.  I have to say, with 48 colors to choose from, I had a bit of a time narrowing it down.

Coloring on wood can be a bit different than paper.  You have to add the color in layers.  Start with lighter colors and then add layers of darker colors on top to create shadowing.

Once you are finished with all the color, spray your completed project with clear fixative.

Here is my completed Queen of Spades.  Working with a new medium was a lot of fun and I think I will be making more projects with Art Pencils in the future!  In fact, there are quite a few free patterns offered on the Sitcom that would work well with this medium such as:

Peacock Doodle Pattern
Enchanted Fish
Holiday Partridge
Winter Fairy
Carousel Horse
Lobster Zentangle
