Our German Shepherd, Sandy, selected us to be her owners one day back in 1998. She showed up on our doorstop and refused to leave. She is a beautiful white full blooded German Shepherd and I was sure she must have an owner looking for her. We put flyers up and called all the shelters and checked with the local vets and nobody was looking for her. We didn’t have a fenced in yard at the time and I really didn’t want to take on such a huge dog. She weighed nearly one hundred pounds at the time. But after lots of begging from the kids and husband who all fell in love with her, we decided to keep her. The first thing my husband did was build a fenced in back yard for her.

And the first thing she did was eat my entire six foot tall hydrangea bush, the back porch steps, and the siding to the house. She was a handful.

But over the years, Sandy has become a major part of the family. She’s been with us as the kids grew up and eventually moved out, and has been a loyal companion to all of us. She is now considered a Senior Citizen in dog years as she is nearly 15 years old. With age, she has slowed down significantly and her mobility has decreased dramatically.
