Yes, it is only July, but it is good to stay on top of what the kids want this year for gifts. While their grandparents, and other relatives may not realize they are growing up and out of little kid toys (“Jake and the Neverland Pirates is sooo 2011, grandpa”), you are the cool Mom that is always ahead of the game. Or, that is the goal at least. Here are some tips and gift ideas for both boys and girls ages 6-10 to help you remain on top of the cool Mom list!
The holidays aren’t like they used to be. People text instead of calling to wish you “Happy Holidays.” Instead of traditional holiday cards, people send e-cards. It’s nice to take a little extra effort and go old school with a phone call or flower delivery from such websites as FTD.com flowers online. But the kids can be a bit more difficult to please…
Revamped Retro Toys
Whatever happened to the toys we grew up with? It seems that Slinky, Light Bright and Star Wars action figures are being replaced with video games and … well … more video games. Classic toys are cool too!
- Starter Guitar — The kids will go crazy over the Daisy Rock Pixie Acoustic Guitar, in Silver Sparkle .
Every kid needs to find their inner rock star musician and who better than to help them out? You! Same goes for the boys. Except stick with the classic Rogue version. Baby blue or pink may just put you at the bottom of their cool list.
- LEGOS — These aren’t just any interlocking building blocks, I’m talking the LEGO Ninjago 9450 Epic Dragon Battle set.
It is something else.
- Battleship-The classic game of sinking each other’s strategically placed battleships never fails to entertain. When you play it together, be sure to remember to make the sounds of missiles and explosions when sinking his battleship. There is also an electronic version.
Get Them Outside
It’s time to take charge and get those kids active. Girls and boys alike enjoy playing, so no matter if you get them a remote control car or a trampoline, they’ll enjoy the gift equally.
- Syma S107/S107G R/C Helicopter *Colors Vary– Some of the best kids toys are actually made for adult enjoyment, too. There is this new version of this classic remote helicopter that is all metal, extremely light and flies better than helicopters of old (thanks to the built in gyro). Or, a Hot Wheels R/C Terrain Twister would cause a complete frenzy of uncontrolled delight.
- Scooters are quite advanced these days and there is a style for kids at every age (that means you!). Consider the M.Y. Products LLC Rockboard Scooter 2-in-1 Adjustable Self-Propel Scooter for the older kids and Fisher Price Grow-with-Me 3-in-1 Skateboard as a starter for the younger ones. Don’t forget a helmet and protector pads just in case they take a little tumble.
- Wenzel Alpine 8.5 X 8-Feet Dome Tent (Light Grey/Blue/Gold)-A tent and some outdoor gear is the perfect way to teach the kids about the outdoors on an overnight (in the backyard) camping trip. This could get the whole family involved!
Best EVER Gift
The ultimate in presents is always the “experience” gift. This means tickets! Tickets to a theme park like Lego Land (you know you want to go and just need a kid to take with you) or the local state fair. Passes to a few laps around the Go-Kart track. Thrills and laughter are what you are going for.
Coolest Mom EVER!
