Drop those cheese puffs! Make an easy, healthy frozen fruit dessert!

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

I was asked to do a review of the Big Boss Swirlio Frozen Fruit Dessert Maker.  Our family is currently making an attempt to eat healthier, so I was happy to take on the challenge.

So I set about prying the bag of cheese puffs out of the hubby’s orange coated fingers and promised both him and my father-in-law a healthy dessert in it’s place.  You would think I was asking them to give up the remote control and eat a branch of broccoli.  And I’m sure they are on cheese puff withdrawal.  (It is a tough habit to break).  But they did decide to humor me.

The great thing about the Swirlio is that you can take your favorite fruits, freeze them, and then create an amazing soft serve frozen dessert in just minutes!  No preservatives, no added sugar.  Nothing but fruity fun.

The machine itself came pretty much already assembled.  Using the instructions, I took it apart, washed everything and reassembled it in just a few minutes.  I then rounded up a bunch of frozen fruit.  You can prepare and freeze fresh fruit, or do like I did- buy it already frozen.  I’m always up for easy to make recipes.

The machine comes with a book with over 50 recipes to try.  Recipes like:

  • Berry Blast
  • Peachy Keen
  • Cranberry Pomegranate Slush
  • Mint Chocolate Chip
  • Chocolate Hazelnut Dream
  • Cherry Cheesecake
  • Berry Margarita

So hard to choose!!  So I asked the guys what they would like, and after much deliberation, we chose three different recipes to try.

My father-in-law wanted to try the Peach Melba Supreme which consists of frozen bananas, peach slices and raspberries.  The first step is to cut up the frozen banana into 1″ chunks and mix it with the rest of the frozen fruit in a bowl.

Place the frozen fruit into the top of the machine.  Turn it on and start pushing the fruit through the machine with the plunger.

And looky here!  We have soft serve!

My father-in-law was quite pleased with his bowl of frozen dessert!

For the hubby, I went with a bit of chocolate.

His dessert consisted of frozen bananas, frozen cherries and chocolate pieces.

It made a chocolate cherry treat that the hubby ate faster than I could get it all in the bowl.  I then made myself a peach frozen dessert.  Let’s just say- it was awesome!

 Swirlio Tips and Tricks:

  1. To get a consistency similar to ice-cream, always add banana.  If you want a sorbet type dessert, then leave it out.
  2. Allow the fruit to thaw about 10 minutes before trying to make dessert.  The first batch I made gave me a good workout because the fruit wasn’t soft enough.  It got much easier when the fruit had thawed a little.
  3. If you are going to make three different flavors like we did, you might consider taking the machine apart and washing it between flavors.  My father-in-law said his tasted mostly like raspberries, my husband said his tasted mostly like peaches (from my father-in-law’s dessert) and he didn’t taste much chocolate.  My peach dessert?  Well I had a bunch of chocolate in mine.  Not that I minded.  LOL!

Recommendation?

Well we each gave it a thumbs up.  If you are counting; that is Three Thumbs up!  We love it! Incredibly easy to make healthy desserts and a quick clean up.  You totally can’t beat that!  My Swirlio is going to find a permanent home on my RV.  Next trip, we plan on checking out some of those Margarita recipes!
