To Sandy…

As in any sitcom, sometimes real life gets gets in the way.  This weekend, we had to say goodbye to our beautiful German Shepherd, Sandy.  A rescue dog, she has been our constant companion for the past twelve years.  Her calm, good nature was always a good mix with the other dogs.  And she was always very protective and gentle with our children.

It wasn’t sudden.  We have known the day was coming as she was dealing with increasing pain every day.  Sandy suffered from a common ailment of the Shepherd breed called Hip Dysplasia.  Over the years, her joints in her hips have degenerated.  So much so that in the past four months, she had lost the ability to get up on her own and we have had go so far as to hold her up while she was eating.
We are grateful that we were given the chance to know her.  We will truly miss her beautiful spirit and know in our hearts that somewhere she is now running through fields chasing rabbits and having no more pain.

  9. I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your lovely dog. We lost our Lab in April & everyone still misses him. Sandy was lucky to be rescued by such a great family that truly loved & cared for thier dog, & I'm sure she loved being able to hang out with Tom Selleck & his awesome moustache.
    Hugs

So very sorry to hear this Suzy. My heart goes out to you guys. I lost my beautiful little dog after 13 glorious years 18 months ago, and I still miss her every day. She was a rescue dog too, and the most amazing dog I have ever known. She died suddenly from a snake bite, so at least I was spared some of the pain you must have been feeling in Sandy's last days. I know it probably doesn't feel like it now, but it does get a little easier, and over time, you will be able to think of the good times you shared without the tears welling up. You obviously loved her very much and she was lucky to have found such a wonderful caring family.

I know this time is going to be hard on you and yours. I have been through the same situation with several dogs and it will never get easier. I love that you posted about her to show how much our "pets" mean to us deep down and how they really are a part of the family.
